Need help, Alan/Anyone

Ive gone to lay out my UV's to start texturing my project but have stumbled across a problem. I applied the UV Grid to my dressing table but it doesn't seem to show.

When i press 6 nothing happens, or when i first apply the shader the shade of grey does not change. But when i go into the attributes, it shows that the shader is on there.

Any ideas why this is happening and how to fix this?

  1. Hi Rich,

You missed Blue Velvet today - please try and watch it at some point! While I can't help you with your technical problem, can i suggest you post your enquiry on the cg arts group blog and elicit help from the second and third years...

  3. Sorry about that Phil, Im still quite ill, hopefully i will be okay for fridays lessons. I do really want to watch the poltergeist and blue velvet, those and halloween were the movies i was most looking forward to. Simon, when i render out the scene it just renders with the grey lambert.

  4. what type of file do you have the texture saved as? IIRC i think that tiffs have an embedded alpha channel that can occaisionally cause a similiar problem. If that is the case then I'll have to try and remember the remedy, aside from saving it out in a different file type. Bevels can also cause problems, but I don't think that is your problem.

  5. No worries Rich - I just want you to experience the films - not exactly nagging you, just keen that you don't miss out! :-) Hope you're feeling better.

  6. Oh and have you checked the render stats for the object, to make sure nought is amiss there. Lastly are you rendering in mental ray or anything funkier that software rendering?

  7. Simon, the file type on the UV grid is just a jpeg, it seemed to work fine on the street project. I opened a new scene to check it wasnt a mistake in making my tableau vivant scene, created a square, applied the grid and still the same problem.

  9. Hi Richard,

    Some questions...

    1) Can you see the UVs in the Uv texture Editor?

    2) Did you make this object using any type of conversion? Ie, you made it using nurbs and converted it to Polygons?

  10. Hi Alan, when i plannar map the objects and go into the UV Editor, i can see all the UV's and arrane them fine, I just cant see whether there will be any problems because i cannot see the UV gid in any of the views, perp, front etc..

No i just used the polygon primitives to create all items.

  11. Ok...Have you checked that the normals are facing in the correct direction (outwards)?

  12. Good question, ill check it when i get onto my laptop with Maya on it.

  13. Alan, i checked the normals and they are facing outwards.

  14. The last thing to check is the object and scene. Assign 'Lambert 1' back to the object and then choose 'File - Export Selection'. Save the object out by itself.

Start a new scene and choose file import and bring the object back in again. Repeat the assignment of a new shader and UV texture.

If you still have a problem come and see me

  16. Hi Alan, i just tryed doing that and still no good. I made a whole new scene, created a square and tryed to apply the grid, still no luck. I think its my copy of maya playing up.

I remember you mentioning that deleting the maya file and opening maya again will start fresh, like set to factory settings. I will take a copy of all my projects and give that a go.

    Hopefully it will work.
